Venice 1629

In 1629 Heinrich Schütz published his first book of Symphoniae Sacrae, the fruit of his second visit to Venice to learn the latest developments in modern vocal music from the likes of Claudio Monteverdi and Alessandro Grandi. But the year also saw the publication of two landmark collections in the development of virtuosic instrumental music in the emerging Baroque style, by wind-player Dario Castello and violinist Biagio Marini respectively. And Monteverdi himself went into print that year in the anthology Quarta raccolta de’ sacri canti. This programme offers a choice selection from each of these publications as a series of snapshots from an extraordinary year in the life of this most musical of cities.

‘Another triumph for Jamie Savan and his Gonzaga Band … a model of how scholarship and performance should complement one another’ Early Music Review
