Steven Devine starts the first of Dartington Summer School’s series “Bach’s Influence”.
His fortepiano recital explores the ways in which two of Bach’s sons, Carl Philipp Emanuel and Wilhelm Friedemann, shook off their father’s influence to revolutionise the expressive and virtuosic capabilities not just of the instrument, but also of the players. Their boundary-breaking, astonishing music contrasts with searching, slower movements, pushing the boundaries of harmonic invention beyond accepted practice – or even accepted ‘good taste’.
