Kate Semmens (soprano), Steven Devine (harpsichord)

This delicious programme explores 17th and 18th century English composers well known for their artistry in painting words and music; and those writing for London’s Pleasure Gardens.

The audiences at the Pleasure Gardens liked music that was melodious and accessible: if they stayed to listen, composers hoped that they might purchase the printed music afterwards. Many of the texts explore simple pastoral scenes, where shepherds and shepherdesses fall in and out of love, sometimes with disastrous effect…

Purcell If Music be the Food of Love; Oh Fair Cedaria
Croft Suite no.16 in A major
Boyce As Thyrsis Reclin’d
Arne The Fond Appeal
Handel Capriccio in C Major
Greene Vivace from Sonata in B flat; Orpheus with his Lute
