This concert, celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth looks at early influences on his compositions emerging from the melting pot of the Viennese musical scene. Played on a copy of a Viennese fortepiano built by Matthaeus Heilmann in 1785, Beethoven’s early works are put into the context of the sound world and sonorities that he was to continue to develop.

Beethoven studied composition with Haydn in Vienna and similarities can be seen between his song ‘Adelaide’ and Haydn’s ‘O tuneful voice’, both written around 1795. Another dominant figure in the Viennese musical scene was Mozart, and here his later songs contrast with earlier songs of Beethoven. The songs are interspersed with keyboard works by Beethoven and Haydn.
